Green onions should be rinsed in cold water before cutting. The white bulb should be pared of any greens or skins that are slimy, papery, or wilted.
How To Cut Green Onions For Salads, Garnishes, or Other Raw Preparations
- To clean the white bulb, peel off any dried outer parts.
- When cutting more than one onion at a time, hold the bulb (or bulbs) with your fingers curled in to prevent the tips from getting cut.
- While holding your knife in one hand, cut the green onion about half a centimeter above the tip.
- Slice the green part of the onion slowly, keeping the knife tip on the cutting board, so that it is 1/4 centimeter thick.
- Cut down to the base of the bulb if you plan to use it. The flavor can be stronger when you cut the whites in half.

Storing Green Onions For A Couple Of Days
Green onions store well in the plastic bags provided by supermarkets for several days.
If you put them in the fridge without the plastic, they will wilt and lose their crunch. Make sure they are wrapped up, though.
The outer edges of the white bulbs may dry out if they are stored in plastic baggies. You can peel them off after a quick soak!
Storing Green Onions Longer Than 2 Days
Here’s a trick you can use if you want to keep your green onions crisp and fresh for a longer period of time.
Fill a small cup with water about an inch deep. The green onions should be placed in the jar then covered with the grocery store’s plastic produce bag.
Use the green onion cup within 7-9 days after placing it in the fridge.
Can You Regrow Green Onions?
Is it possible to grow green onions again? The answer is yes! Follow these steps to regrow your green onions:
- Leaving the roots and white bulb intact, slice the green onion down to the bulb.
- With the root side facing up, form a small cup or mason jar from the ends of the green onions.
- Make sure that the roots of the bulb are covered with water, but leave the top of the bulb exposed.
- A windowill is a good place to place your jar. Every five days, replace the water with fresh water and keep the roots submerged in it.
- The green stalks will start growing again within a few days. Then you can snip them right from the cup when they have grown a few inches. Eventually, however, the bulbs will cease to produce.
- Once you have four inches of stalks, you may send it out into a pot or grow it in your garden if you wish.
- Green onions can be cut all the way down to the ground and they will continue to grow.
