Understanding How to Use Pyrex (And How Not To!)
There is a lot of functionality in Pyrex cookware. The dish can be cooked, baked, reheated, or even chilled, but there are some things to keep in mind.
Pyrex should never be used on the stovetop, and that is the most important thing you should know. Whatever type of cooktop you have, it doesn’t matter. It is not compatible with Pyrex.
In the event that you attempt to cook with Pyrex on a stovetop, you might end up with a major disaster.
For the oven, Pyrex was made. Pyrex should be used in a certain way in every situation, so there are a few things that you should know.
Some Pyrex cookware older than 20 years was actually designed to be stovetop safe. The old cookware can be used on the stove if it is stovetop safe.
If you try to use Pyrex on a stovetop, though, it could shatter since Pyrex is generally considered bakeryware. The Pyrex in your grandmother’s kitchen was used on the stove because of this.

It is not recommended to use Pyrex bakeware or glassware that is known and used in traditional bakeware and glassware today on the stovetop.
Proper Use and Care of Pyrex

As a first step, make sure the temperature in your oven is not more than 425 degrees when you use Pyrex. In addition to being heat resistant up to 425 degrees Fahrenheit, Pyrex bakeware is dishwasher safe.
The glass might not be able to withstand the heat of the broiler, thus shattering the pan if you use it.
Despite its popularity, Pyrex should not be put in a cold oven. Pyrex should always be at room temperature before you place it in the oven.
It is difficult to heat glass if it’s been in the freezer or fridge, so it should come to room temperature before it goes in the oven.
Likewise, the reverse is true. Keep your hot pan out of the freezer while it is still hot.
You shouldn’t put Pyrex in the oven if it is chipped or cracked, because this compromises the integrity of the dish.
In addition, you should at least half fill your dish. Adding liquid or cover the bottom of the dish is one way to achieve this. You shouldn’t fill it half way or to the edge of the dish.
With today’s best cleaning practices, you’re no longer restricted in your options. Alternatively, you can use dish soap and a dishwasher to clean Pyrex dishes. Cleaners without abrasives are recommended for use.
The dishes can be soaked and then washed. Make sure you don’t introduce extreme temperature changes that might damage the dish.
What Causes Pyrex to Shatter?
Most likely, there is a reason for your Pyrex to break. Stress on Pyrex is the most common cause of it shattering. Strain could come from changes in temperature or from other factors.
Several things can cause Pyrex to shatter, but we will mention these three. Here are the most common causes, which we discussed in basic form above.
- (Freeze to oven, etc.) Extreme temperature changes.
- Food and liquid are not full enough in the dish
- An excess amount of pressure was created by heating a dish that was cracked or chipped
Dealing with Shattered Pyrex
When your Pyrex shatters, it can be extremely frightening. But what can be done? When this happens, what should you do?
The possibilities are endless, but let’s look at what you’re most likely to encounter.
Dishes might shatter in the oven, sitting on a stove or counter, in your hands, or in the oven. Usually there are no warning signs.
In the event of a break, the dish will shatter on its own schedule. The process depends entirely on the elements.
You shouldn’t have to worry about your dish shattering if you follow the safety tips I mentioned earlier. Obviously, there’s no guarantee. However, the dishes can withstand the temperatures and use as long as they are handled properly.
You should first make sure everyone in your area is ok if your Pyrex does break.
Ensure that no one has been hurt or skin has been damaged by glass shards. Hopefully, there will not be any drastic first aid needs.
Do not attempt to salvage food that is affected by the shattered Pyrex. I don’t think salvaging the food is worth the hassle since the glass could be anywhere.
Food or any other item not covered with a lid might have tiny shards hiding inside.
Make sure to wear shoes and gloves before you start cleaning. Additionally, this will help you avoid tripping over glass or cutting yourself unexpectedly.
As small shards could land anywhere, handle the glass very carefully and clean the surrounding areas.
It might not be easy to see or clean up shards that are not easily visible with a damp paper towel. In addition to shattering into tiny pieces, glass can become almost invisible until you touch it.

Why Can Old Pyrex be Used on the Stove?
Pyrex isn’t the only thing left. Pyrex cookware made with metal handles and Pyrex bakeware and glassware without metal handles differ from Pyrex cookware that can be used on a stovetop.
There are no longer any products in the cookware line. As a result, it was compatible with stovetops because it was made from borosilicate glass.
Can You Put Pyrex on a Hot Plate?
Hot plates are similar to stoves in design, and are often used for cooking. You should not use Pyrex on the hot plate if you are cooking. The tool may be safe if you are using it to keep warm.
