There are a number of ways you can store avocados if you buy them by the baker’s dozen. Using avocados before they turn bad can be tricky.
Can you refrigerate avocados? Yes. Refrigerating avocados is possible. It is the best method of storing them once ripe. An avocado continues to ripen at room temperature. In the refrigerator, avocados can last up to three days if they are perfectly ripe.

How to Store Avocados
Avocados require a certain amount of art to store. To make sure your avocado is ripe, you should check its status every day, sometimes multiple times.
You may never be able to ripen an avocado if you store it in too-cold conditions. A ripe avocado can turn into a black mush in a matter of minutes if left in a warm environment.
Avocados have many ways to be preserved, but you’ll need to be vigilant about their ripeness.
You can leave an unripe avocado on your counter for up to 5 days before it becomes too ripe if it has not been exposed to direct sunlight. Place it near the oven or on a windowsill so that it will ripen sooner.
Your avocado will be ready to eat within a day or two, so once it is ripe, you should store it in the refrigerator. Keep your hands away from a constantly fluctuating temperature from a door opening and avoid moving them around too much.
Whenever possible, refrigerate ripe avocados. Although it won’t completely stop ripening, it will slow it down. Eat an avocado as soon as it has become ripe, whether it is in the fridge or not.
How to Store Avocados Long-Term
It is best to freeze avocados for long-term storage if you have a large collection that you cannot eat before they become overripe.
When you try to freeze avocados, wait for them to be ripe, or a day or two before they are ripe.
It’s easiest to freeze avocados for future use if you puree them first with fresh lemon or lime juice in a food processor. This helps to keep the fruit fresh while frozen.
Ideally, you should replace as much air in the bag as you can and then seal tightly, removing as much air as possible. Include a date on the bag. Your avocado will remain delicious for about three to six months.
You’ll notice a slight texture difference when you mash your avocados, but once you add some spices and stir, you won’t notice.
Refrigerating Avocados – Best Practices
Is it necessary to refrigerate avocados? The answer is no. However, if you don’t put them in the fridge when they’re ripe or close to being ripe, you’d better eat them quickly. Before you know it, your avocado will become overripe and mushy.
If avocados are mostly black or dark green with bumpy skin, they should be refrigerated as soon as possible.
Fruit ripe enough to merit being stored in your fridge can be pressed and felt to give when pressed. You should eat them right away if you press into them and they feel soft. If you do not eat them right away, they should be refrigerated.
Best Ways to Store Avocados

Ideal Avocado Storage Temperature
Avocados should ideally be stored at 68 degrees Fahrenheit. If the avocado is kept outside of direct sunlight and at this temperature, it should ripen within 3–5 days.
Fifty degrees is a very cool temperature, and will significantly slow the ripening process. The temperature may be the right one for your avocados, depending on how long they have to be stored.
How to Store Half an Avocado
You can save the remaining avocado for up to five days after you cut it and have used half of it.
Maintain the quality of your avocado by keeping the pit inside. This will prevent browning caused by exposure to air.
The exposed area can also be brushed with freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice. Olive oil can also be used if you do not have citrus.
You should place the avocados in a place in the fridge where they won’t get squished in plastic wrap.
It is also possible to place the avocado facedown inside a Tupperware container and fill the container with cold water about a quarter of the way full. Once sealed, the avocado should be refrigerated overnight. With the water, your avocado might last a couple more days without browning at all.
Can You Refrigerate Avocado After Cutting It?
The best way to preserve avocados is to keep them in the refrigerator after they have been cut. Be sure to save your pit until the avocado has been consumed completely. Avocado’s pit helps prevent browning, even after it has been cut into many pieces or sliced.
If you are going to store your avocado, you must limit its exposure to air if you want to prevent browning. The best avocados should also be consumed within one day of being cut.
Refrigerating Sliced Avocado
Apply a thin coat of citrus juice using a pastry or basting brush to all exposed surfaces if you have citrus juice available. When you’re ready to use your avocado, you can use olive oil instead, but its taste and texture will be altered.
Spread your avocado slices out on a sheet of plastic wrap so that they overlap in an organized manner. If they touch, less air will be able to reach the pieces.
If you still have the pit, arrange the slices around it as much as you can.
Remove all air from the avocado by gently pressing the plastic around it. You can protect the avocado in your fridge by placing it in a Tupperware container.
Refrigerating Chopped Avocado
When your avocado has been diced, transfer it to a Tupperware container large enough to hold your avocado but not much more.
Slice lemon or lime into the glass and squeeze it over the avocados. Toss all the edges to coat the avocados. You can use olive oil in the absence of citrus juice, but the result will be different in terms of taste and texture.
Place the pit of your avocado with your chopped avocado. Be sure that you tightly seal your Tupperware container before placing it in the fridge.
Refrigerating Mashed Avocado
The easiest thing to store is probably mashed avocado. Transfer the mashed potatoes to a Ziploc bag after adding some lemon or lime juice.
Spread the banana out on your counter and squeeze all the air out of it. Then place it in your fridge as far away from the squishing as possible.
Should You Store Unripe Avocados in Your Fridge?
It’s better to store almost-ripe avocados in the fridge than unripe avocados.
It is possible for avocados to go bad even before they ripen if they are kept cold before being ripe. This defeats the point of refrigerating them.

How Can You Make an Avocado Ripen Quicker?
Here are a few tips and tricks you can use if you have a green, hard avocado that you want to ripen more quickly.
You can place it in direct sunlight for an easy, natural solution. Most fruits and vegetables will ripen faster when they are exposed to natural heat and sun energy.
As a second option, place the avocado with a banana in a paper bag to ripen faster.
Fruit and vegetables that are exposed to the gas ethylene can speed up their ripening process, since bananas produce it for free. If your avocado was green when you started, the paper bag helps ripen it overnight.
How Do You Know When an Avocado is Ripe?
The color, the firmness, and the texture of the avocado’s skin let us know when it’s time to eat the avocado. Ideally, ripe avocados should be nearly black with bumpy, ripply skin. Although firm, the skin should be flexible.
When making guacamole, you don’t want soft, mushy avocados. It should be possible to press into the area where there used to be a stem without leaving an indentation. You can tell if something is ripe or not if it is too hard. The softness indicates unripeness.
The same thing can be done if you have cut into an avocado that wasn’t as ripe as you had expected it to be and wish to have it ripen more quickly.
Keep the pit inside your avocado to prevent browning from air exposure. The exposed flesh can be lightly brushed with lemon juice or lime juice, followed by placing the halves back together. Use an elastic band to hold them in place.
You should keep it away from air exposure and airborne bacteria while it ripens, since left on the counter will ensure it ripens more quickly. Place it in the fridge for safekeeping and wrap it in plastic wrap. It should be ready to eat within a day or two.
How Do You Keep Avocados From Ripening Too Fast?
You should keep an avocado in the fridge so it does not ripen too quickly.
As long as it doesn’t get squashed, a crisper bin is a great place for an avocado. Try to be gentle with bumps and bruises rather than causing them to ripen too quickly.
You can keep your avocados in the refrigerator for about a week before they begin to ripen.
How Long Do Avocados Last?
Assuming the avocados are stored in a cool, dark place for four to five days, they’ll ripen fast. Fresh, even if they aren’t quite edible, they are considered fresh during this period.
As long as the avocado is kept at 65 degrees F or warmer, it will remain ripe for up to 2 days before becoming overripe. It can be stored in your fridge for up to three days if you place it in your fridge before it gets overripe.
Green avocados can be stored in the fridge for a maximum of 7–8 days while still green and hard. If it’s not completely ripe at this point, it’s no longer fresh either and is likely to develop brown spots inside.
What Can You Do With an Overripe Avocado?
Ignore going to the refrigerator if your avocado got too ripe and you forgot. It can still be used as long as it does not smell bad or feel slimy!

- Avocado chocolate pudding: Mash up overripe avocados with cocoa powder, honey, or maple syrup.
- Avocado smoothie: Add an avocado to your smoothie and blend as usual. Color could change a little, but the result will be creamy.
- Avocado Coconut Mousse: Blend coconut milk solids with avocado and honey in a food processor until smooth.
Can You Use Frozen Avocados?
Avocados can be frozen, and further, they can be used later while still frozen.
